Hey yall, sorry about the hiatus. The last couple of weeks have been filled with babysitting and hanging out with the family. A few fun highlights included a trip to the World War I museum, a new bike, and a Blitzen Trapper concert with my long lost bff.
(view from the top of the museum looking out on downtown – oh how i love thee kc)
(credits to the pitch – forgot my camera)
I am back in the STL for summer class and hanging out with my girl Jenny! Can you believe it is almost July already?!
Catch ya later
what a fun sunday afternoon!
Latte Land is kind of the local Starbuck’s of KC. Always good but nothing too special – all the locations lack any sense of character with their “sleek” interiors. I do like their coffe though, and it is always a good post run stop but I would not recommend it if you want to feel the comfy coffeehouse vibe.
I ordered a cafe au lait and added my own cinnamon on top, prices are comparable to Starbucks – supporting local businesses is worth it though!
The Hospital Hill run is a challenging Kansas City race known to locals and runners from around the country as one of the toughest half marathon courses due to the number of hills and warm weather. If you talk to any of its race finishers who “conquered the hill” they will tell you it’s the kind of race you dread to do but is completely worth doing – as any other half seems easy compared to it. Right after my first half in St Louis I signed up for this race, but knew it was going to be hard.
Since being home, I have been training with Runner’s Edge running group with my mom (who also ran the race) and had been keeping up my mileage. My longest run before my first half was 10 miles, but for this race I did a 12 miler. I learned a lesson the week before the race when I experienced some bad soreness following a cardio pilates class. I decided to take the week before the half off of running to rest my legs – something that really made me nervous. You technically shouldn’t lose any endurance with 5-7 days off, but I kept worrying all week that I was going to be out of shape by the time of the race! Note to self – no spurr of the moment work out classes before a race!!
Luckily, the race went really well. The hills made my legs hurt early on but nothing I couldn’t handle. I started out slow and gradually increased my speed. My goal was a 2:25 time – I knew 80 degree weather and hills would make me a little slower than my 2:09 time from the Go STL half. However, I finished at 2:14 (10:19 avg pace) I was so happy!
After finishing two half marathons, I am now looking for a flat race that I can train to finish under 2 hours. Any suggestions?
I was so happy to finish my second half marathon today! Woke up at 4:30am and it was already 78 degrees outside – got a little nervous – but luckily it was cloudy and breezy for most of the race so it wasn’t that bad (okay, it was still really hot!) I had taken the week off due to some soreness (darn you aerobic yoga!) but overall I felt pretty good but I know my legs will be killing tomorrow!
Refueled with some pizza at Blue Grotto in Brookside. I got the quatro formaggio which was divine!
And spyed on the kitchen from above
Planning my next coffeehouse adventure for tomorrow!
I have declared the month of June to be coffee month and have challenged myself to explore the world of Kansas City coffeehouses. While I have already been to many, I am going to re-visit some oldies, while also trying new places as well.
I have the day off so I got to visit my first stop on the list, The Filling Station, for breakfast. I have been here once before and tried their iced coffee and quiche but their fresh juice board made me want a second visit asap. Because I already made myself a coffee earlier in the morning, I got the liquid sunshine fresh juice which contained carrot, strawberry, apple, orange and lemon juices. It was sooooo good! I also ordered their quiche again (love quiche – need to try making my own soon.) This place is trendy without trying to be and the people working there are friendly and layed back – in a good way.
Afterward, I walked around the city market area and enjoyed the pretty weather!
